Until recently, very little early Arabic documentary material was known from the eastern extremities of the Islamic world. This has now been dramatically increased by the discovery of the Arabic documents that are published in this volume. They consist of thirty-two legal and administrative documents from what appears to have been a private archive of a family resident in north-eastern Afghanistan, and are datable from AH 138 to AH 160 (AD 755–777).
