The marriage of Willy Novinsky, a middle-ranked professional tennis player and Eric Oberdorf, who aims to make his mark on the international tennis circuit, starts well, but soon gives way to competition over who can rise to the top first. As Willys' ranking plummets whilst her husband's climbs, she slides towards the first tragedy of her life.
