The New Movement (Nieuwe Bouwen) has become highly significant to the development of architecture not only within the Netherlands but also far outside its borders. The New Movement is mainly characterised by its concern for light, air and hygiende and a functional use of materials and techniques. This work provides for the very first time in a clear and accessible way a survey of the movement's most important architects, all members of the progressive associations De 8 Opbouw. The authors trace the basic principles of the movement, which, Hitchcock and Johnson opined, so emphasised technology and function that architecture was out of the question. The work has a preface by the Italian architecture historian Maristella Casciato and an introduction by the author Jan Molema. It also includes essays by Christopher Verneon on Berlage in America and the introduction to the catalogue Americana 1880-1930 by Leonard K. Eaton.
