This study presents a multidisciplinary approach to explaining fluctuations in Dutch trade union membership, from its beginnings to the present day. Although the emphasis lies on economic theories and analyses, the results of this thesis show that the contribution of the historical and social sciences is indispensable in gaining insight into all the deternimants of unionization in the Netherlands
